Flammable & Combustible Liquids

An Advanced Interactive course on flammable and combustible liquids delivering 20 transfer-scenario interactions and 6 validated competencies across grounding, bonding, and storage decisions. Workers leave able to recognize vapour and static ignition conditions before they pour.

Flammable and combustible liquids safety awareness for everyone who handles, transfers, uses or stores solvents, fuels, alcohols, thinners, degreasers, parts-washer fluid, diesel and oils — in manufacturing, automotive and equipment maintenance, oil and gas, agriculture, construction, warehousing, laboratories and general industry.

Equip everyone who handles, transfers, uses or stores flammable and combustible liquids to understand that it is the vapour, not the liquid, that burns — and that the vapour is…

Who this course is for

Workers who handle, transfer, or store flammable and combustible liquids like fuels, solvents, and thinners.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. It's the Vapour That Burns — Where this course begins — WHMIS is the prerequisite and names the hazard; this course teaches the…
  2. Flammable vs Combustible — Why the Number Matters — Flammable versus combustible liquids and why the flashpoint number matters: a flammable liquid (low…
  3. Transfer Without a Spark — The transfer/dispensing danger: moving liquid generates static electricity, and a static spark in…
  4. Control the Ignition, Control the Air — Controlling the two sides of the fire triangle you can control — ignition and concentration.
  5. The Vapour Trail — Stop and report an open flammable container, a flammable by an ignition source, a transfer without…

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.

This certificate records completion of knowledge training in flammable and combustible liquids — flashpoint and vapour behaviour, approved containers and safety cans, ignition-source control, ventilation, storage and quantity discipline under MR 217/2006 — and it records the Trained state only. It does not establish that the holder can dispense or transfer a flammable liquid safely. Bonding and grounding a container before a transfer, and pouring slowly with the nozzle kept below the liquid surface so that flowing liquid cannot build a static charge, are taught and assessed here as knowledge; before a worker is relied on to dispense or decant, the employer must confirm the bonding and grounding arrangement at that dispensing point, observe them making the transfer, and sign that observation off as Competent. The safety data sheet for the product and the site dispensing and storage procedure always govern. Fighting a fire is outside this course and belongs to the site fire-safety and hot-work programs.

Common questions

How long does Flammable & Combustible Liquids take?

About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Flammable & Combustible Liquids certificate valid?

One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for flammable and combustible liquid safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the liquids, processes, dispensing arrangements or storage change.

Which laws and standards does Flammable & Combustible Liquids cover?

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; Manitoba Fire Code, M.R. 82/2023; and 4 more listed on this page.
