An advanced chemical-safety course that presents hazards the way the job does — reading labels and SDS sections, catching incompatible storage, and choosing controls before exposure — across 20 interactions. It builds working chemical judgment rather than definitions to memorize.
Chemical safety awareness training for everyone who handles, stores, or works near hazardous chemicals — in manufacturing, chemical and petrochemical operations, oil and gas, food and beverage, water treatment, laboratories and academia, mining, and general industry.
Equip everyone who handles, stores or works near hazardous chemicals to understand that WHMIS names the hazard but this course teaches what to do with it — that the label tells you what a chemical is while the storage plan tells you what it must stay away…

Who this course is for
Workers who handle, store, or work near chemicals and hazardous products as part of their daily job.
Manufacturing, chemical and petrochemical process workers who handle or store hazardous chemicals
Food and beverage, water treatment and general-industry staff who use cleaners, sanitizers, acids and bases
Laboratory and academic personnel who bench-handle, decant and store reagents
Oil and gas and mining workers who work near chemical storage, transfer and use
What you will learn
Explain that WHMIS names the hazard while this course teaches what to DO with it — the label tells you what a chemical is; the storage plan tells you what it must stay away from
Identify the storage families that must stay segregated — flammables, oxidizers, acids and bases, plus water-reactives and toxics — and explain why the combination, not the single bottle, is the hazard
Apply safe handling: small quantity at the bench and bulk in storage, decant correctly, never return a decanted chemical to its source container, label working containers, and use the right PPE for the task
Treat ventilation and secondary containment as engineering controls — fume hood, local exhaust, spill trays, compatible containers — that are controls, not the SDS, and not a substitute for segregation
Prevent releases through storage, quantity and containment discipline, and know the awareness-level response boundary — contain if trained and safe, otherwise evacuate and report

Laws and standards covered
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210)
Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006
Manitoba Fire Code, M.R. 82/2023
CSA B340/B341
Certificate and renewal
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.
This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in chemical handling, storage and segregation. It does not create or renew a chemical handling and storage certification, and it does not establish that the holder can safely handle, decant or store a chemical at a particular workplace. Practical competency — handling and decanting correctly, and working to the site's own storage plan — is confirmed by the employer through workplace observation, not by this course. WHMIS remains the standing prerequisite, and respirator selection and fit are deferred to the Respiratory Protection family.
Common questions
How long does Chemical Safety Awareness take?
About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
How long is the Chemical Safety Awareness certificate valid?
One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for chemical-safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the chemicals, processes or storage arrangements change.
Which laws and standards does Chemical Safety Awareness cover?
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; Manitoba Fire Code, M.R. 82/2023; and 5 more listed on this page.
Is the online certificate enough on its own?

Is this course part of a training program?
Yes. It is included in Chemical & WHMIS Safety Program.
