An advanced interactive course of 20 interactions and 6 validated competencies covering securing and capping cylinders, separating incompatible gases, checking regulators, and spotting setups that turn a cylinder into a projectile or fire source. It builds the handling decisions that prevent catastrophic releases.
Compressed gas cylinder safety awareness for everyone who handles, moves, stores, connects or works near compressed gas cylinders — in welding and fabrication, maintenance, manufacturing, laboratories, healthcare, food and beverage, water treatment, construction and general industry.
Equip everyone who handles, moves, stores, connects or works near compressed gas cylinders to understand that the cylinder is a hazard before the valve is ever opened — a pressure vessel holding enormous stored energy, with the valve as its weak point — so…

Who this course is for
Workers who transport, store, connect, or use compressed gas cylinders such as oxygen, acetylene, and inert gases.
Welding, cutting and fabrication workers who use fuel-gas and oxygen cylinders
Maintenance, manufacturing and general-industry staff who handle, move or store cylinders
Laboratory, academic and healthcare personnel who use gas cylinders at the bench or bedside
Food and beverage, water treatment and process workers who handle CO2, nitrogen and other gases
What you will learn
Explain that the cylinder is a hazard before the valve is opened — a pressure vessel with enormous stored energy whose valve is the weak point, so a fallen cylinder with a sheared valve can become a missile
Recognize the four gas hazard classes — flammable, oxidizer (oxygen is not air), inert or asphyxiant (silent oxygen displacement), and toxic or corrosive — and why each matters
Keep the valve protection cap on whenever a cylinder is not in use or is being moved, and secure every cylinder upright with a chain or stand so it cannot fall
Move cylinders safely — never drag, roll on the side, drop or lift by the valve; use a proper cart — and store them away from heat with fuel gases segregated from oxygen and full separated from empty
Connect and use cylinders safely — the right regulator, no oil or grease on oxygen fittings, leak-check with soapy water not a flame, open the valve slowly standing to the side, and use flashback arrestors on fuel-gas lines

Laws and standards covered
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210)
Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006
CSA B340 / B341
Certificate and renewal
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.
This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in compressed gas cylinder safety. It does not authorize the holder to connect, leak-check or operate a cylinder and regulator on any particular gas or outfit. Before the work, the employer must confirm the worker is competent on the cylinders, regulators and fittings actually in use, and the equipment manufacturers' instructions always govern. This training does not create a cylinder-handling certification, a welding or oxy-fuel qualification, or confined-space competency, which are separate training tiers.
Common questions
How long does Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety take?
About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
How long is the Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety certificate valid?
One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for compressed gas safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the gases, equipment, storage or processes change.
Which laws and standards does Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety cover?
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; CSA B340 / B341; and 5 more listed on this page.
Is the online certificate enough on its own?
This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in compressed gas cylinder safety. It does not authorize the holder to connect, leak-check or operate a cylinder and regulator on any particular gas or outfit. Before the work, the employer must confirm the worker is competent on the cylinders, regulators and fittings actually in use, and the equipment manufacturers' instructions always govern. This training does not create a cylinder-handling certification, a welding or oxy-fuel qualification, or confined-space competency, which are separate training tiers.
Is this course part of a training program?
Yes. It is included in Chemical & WHMIS Safety Program.
