A certification-band course that puts the excavation competent person to work classifying soil, choosing sloping, benching, or shoring, and checking access and spoil placement against the cut. Its 19 interactions and 6 competencies make the below-grade entry decision defensible before anyone goes down.
Knowledge training for the worker an employer designates as the competent person for excavation and trench safety — the person who reads the excavation every day: inspects it, classifies the soil, selects or confirms the protective system, tests the atmosphere in a deep trench, and holds the…
Equip the worker an employer designates as the competent person for excavation and trench safety to read the excavation every day and hold the stop — starting from this course's…
Competent persons, excavation supervisors, and leads who classify soil, design protective systems, and authorize entry into trenches and excavations.
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.
This certificate records completion of knowledge training for the excavation and trenching competent-person role. It does not by itself designate the holder as a competent person for excavations. That designation is made by the employer, which names a worker who is competent in the sense of MR 217/2006 s.1.1 (possessing the knowledge, experience and training to perform the duty) and gives that worker the authority to act, including stopping the work. Manitoba does not issue an excavation competent-person ticket, and the daily inspection is renewed every shift because the ground changes overnight.
About 1 hour 20 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for excavation and trenching training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the soil, the site or the work conditions change — a deeper or longer trench, different or previously-disturbed ground, water in the excavation, overnight rain or a freeze-thaw, nearby traffic or equipment vibration, a new or altered protective system, or a near-miss all trigger a refresh, and the daily inspection itself is renewed every shift because the ground changes overnight.
