Fire Watch trains assigned watchers through 10 interactions — clearing and monitoring the hazard zone, holding position through the full post-work period, and acting on ignition — validating 7 competencies so the role is an active guard, not standing by.
The fire watch is the person who stays when everyone else packs up. Most serious hot-work fires do not start while the torch is burning — sparks and slag drop into gaps and smoulder in hidden combustibles for hours, then flare into an open fire after the crew has gone home.
Enable a worker assigned as a fire watch to perform the role competently: recognize delayed ignition ("the fire that waits"), monitor the full spark-travel zone during the work, continue and close out the watch after the work with a final cold check and log…
Workers assigned as fire watch during and after hot work such as welding, cutting, and grinding.
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.
This certificate records completion of knowledge training for the fire watch role. It does not authorize the holder to stand fire watch on any particular job. The fire-watch assignment is made by the employer under its site hot work permit program, and that program and the permit issued for the job always govern. This training does not confer the trade competency for the hot work itself. It does not establish that the holder can operate a portable fire extinguisher: selecting the right extinguisher and applying PASS are taught and assessed here as knowledge only, and before a worker is relied on to fight even a small fire the employer must provide hands-on extinguisher practice, observe them doing it, and sign that observation off as Competent.
About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
Three years from the day you pass. Refresher recommended every 3 years or sooner after a hot-work fire/near-miss, a new process, or a change of site.
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; CSA W117.2 — Safety in welding, cutting, and allied processes; and 2 more listed on this page.
