Laboratory Safety

An Advanced Interactive laboratory safety course delivering 20 bench-hazard interactions and 6 validated competencies across chemical incompatibility, fume hood use, spills, and exposure controls. Lab safety is practised at the bench rather than read off a wall poster.

Laboratory safety awareness for everyone who works in or near a laboratory — research, quality-control, academic, clinical, environmental and industrial labs. It assumes WHMIS as its prerequisite and does not re-teach how to read a label or a safety data sheet; as the closing course of the Chemical & Process Safety family it brings together, at the bench, the incompatibles of…

Equip everyone who works in or near a laboratory to understand that a lab keeps them safe on routine rather than luck — because daily familiarity with hazards is itself the danger, and the shortcut taken "just this once" is the one that finds them — so that…

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. Routine, Not Luck — The final course in the series — the four earlier courses (incompatibles, flammable vapour…
  2. The Hood and the Equipment You Hope Never to Use — The lab's engineering control and its emergency equipment.
  3. Dressed for the Bench — Lab PPE and bench discipline. PPE: eye protection worn at all times in the lab (not just when a…
  4. Read the Bench — Reading the bench — standing back and seeing what an aware worker sees, because most incidents were…

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.

This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in laboratory safety. It does not authorize the holder to work at the bench in any particular laboratory. Before the work, the employer must confirm the worker is competent in that lab — the fume hood and its marked sash height, the glove material the chemicals in use require, and the location and use of the eyewash, safety shower, spill kit and fire equipment — and the safety data sheet and the laboratory's own written procedures always govern. This training does not create a Chemical Hygiene Officer designation, a laboratory-safety or chemical-hygiene competency certification, or HAZWOPER, biosafety or radiation-safety competency, which are separate training tiers.

Common questions

How long does Laboratory Safety take?

About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Laboratory Safety certificate valid?

One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for laboratory-safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the chemicals, equipment, processes or the lab itself change.

Which laws and standards does Laboratory Safety cover?

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; WHMIS 2015 / GHS; and 4 more listed on this page.
