A hands-on oxy-fuel and cutting course covering setup, leak-testing, backfire and flashback response, and cylinder and hose handling across 10 interactions and 7 competencies, so operators catch the failure points before ignition.
Knowledge-level oxy-fuel and cutting safety aligned with Manitoba WSH Regulation (welding and allied processes; fire and explosion control), CSA W117.2, NFPA 51B, and Compressed Gas Association (CGA) oxy-fuel guidance.
Enable a qualified oxy-fuel worker to work the outfit safely as a knowledge foundation: identify the equipment and the role of flashback arrestors/check valves, respect oxygen as an accelerant (never oil/grease on oxygen fittings; never use oxygen to blow off…
At a glance
Format: Online, self-paced and interactive
Length: about 1 hour 15 minutes, 5 modules
Pass mark: 80% on the final test
Certificate: QR-verified, valid for three years
Jurisdiction: Manitoba law and standards
Who this course is for
Welders, cutters, fabricators, and shop or field workers who set up and use oxy-fuel torches for cutting and heating.
Welders and cutters using oxy-fuel (oxy-acetylene) equipment
Fabrication and metalwork workers who set up and light torches
Maintenance and facilities workers doing occasional torch cutting/heating
Construction and demolition workers using cutting torches
What you will learn
Identify the oxy-fuel outfit — cylinders, regulators, hoses, torch — and the role of flashback arrestors/check valves
Explain why oxygen is not air: it accelerates fire, ignites oil/grease and clothing, and must never be used to blow off or ventilate
Describe fuel-gas properties — acetylene is unstable above ~103 kPa/15 psi, must stay upright, and fuel gases can pool
Set up and light in the correct order: leak-test with soapy solution, purge lines, light fuel first then oxygen, adjust the flame
Distinguish flashback from backfire, and respond — shut off, cool, inspect — with flashback arrestors/check valves in place
Course outline
The Outfit — A Controlled Fire You Carry — The oxy-fuel outfit — cylinders, regulators, hoses, torch — and the flashback arrestors/check valves that stop fire travelling back up the…
Oxygen Is Not Air — the Quiet Accelerant — Oxygen is not air — it is the quiet accelerant. Never oil/grease on oxygen fittings, never use oxygen to blow off or ventilate, and beware…
Fuel Gas, Cylinders & Safe Setup — Fuel-gas properties (acetylene unstable above ~103 kPa/15 psi, kept upright), safe handling of the outfit cylinders, and safe setup…
Lighting the Torch & Flashback — The correct lighting order — purge, light fuel first with a striker, then add oxygen and adjust — and the difference between a backfire (a…
Shut Down, Bleed Down & Close the Job — Closing the job — shut the torch, close cylinder valves, bleed each line, back off the regulators, store the outfit — and the reminder that…
Laws and standards covered
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210)
Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006
CSA W117.2 — Safety in welding, cutting, and allied processes
NFPA 51B — Fire prevention during welding, cutting, and other hot work
Certificate and renewal
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.
This certificate records completion of knowledge training in oxy-fuel and cutting safety. It does not authorize the holder to set up, light or operate an oxy-fuel outfit. Before the work, the employer must confirm the worker is competent on the outfit in use, and the equipment manufacturers' instructions always govern. This training does not confer a welding or cutting trade qualification, and cutting remains governed by the site hot-work permit program and the fire-watch assignment.
Common questions
How long does Oxy-Fuel & Cutting Safety take?
About 1 hour 15 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
How long is the Oxy-Fuel & Cutting Safety certificate valid?
Three years from the day you pass. Refresher recommended every 3 years or sooner after an oxy-fuel fire/flashback/near-miss, a new process or gas, or a change of site.
Which laws and standards does Oxy-Fuel & Cutting Safety cover?
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; CSA W117.2 — Safety in welding, cutting, and allied processes; and 3 more listed on this page.
Is the online certificate enough on its own?

Is this course part of a training program?
Yes. It is included in Hot Work & Fire Safety Program.
