Reactive & Incompatible Chemicals

An Advanced Interactive course on reactive and incompatible chemicals delivering 20 real-scenario interactions and 6 validated competencies in segregation, label reading, and SDS reactivity interpretation. Learners finish able to spot an incompatible pairing before two containers ever meet.

Reactive and incompatible chemicals safety awareness for everyone who handles, stores or works near reactive substances — in laboratories and academia, chemical and process manufacturing, water treatment, oil and gas, food and beverage, mining and general industry.

Equip everyone who handles, stores or works near reactive chemicals to understand that some chemicals do not wait to be mixed — that reactivity is an intrinsic property, and water, air, heat, shock, light, contamination or simply time can trigger a single…

Who this course is for

Workers who store, mix, transfer, or dispose of chemicals in labs, plants, and warehouses where incompatible products share space.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. Some Chemicals Don't Wait — A SINGLE reactive chemical can be a hazard on its own.
  2. The Reactive Classes — The four reactive hazard classes, each defined by its trigger: water-reactives (react with water or…
  3. Read the Conditions, Not Just the Label — Controlling reactivity through the storage and handling CONDITIONS the chemical needs, not the…
  4. The Triggers on the Floor — Read a room for where a trigger and a reactive chemical are about to meet: a water-reactive near a…
  5. The Bottle Nobody Dated — Build the stop-and-report habit: a water-reactive near water, an undated or expired…

Laws and standards covered

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.

This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in reactive and incompatible chemicals — the reactive hazard classes, the storage conditions each one needs, dating peroxide-formers, keeping incompatibles apart and the stop-and-report triggers. It does not create or renew a chemical handling and storage certification, and it does not establish that the holder can safely store, date or segregate a reactive chemical at a particular workplace. Practical competency — storing a reactive under the conditions it needs, dating and checking peroxide-formers, and keeping reactive incompatibles and reactive wastes apart to the site's own storage plan — is confirmed by the employer through workplace observation, not by this course. WHMIS remains the standing prerequisite, responding to a reactive spill is deferred to the Spill Response family, and unstable or expired stock is left for trained disposal.

Common questions

How long does Reactive & Incompatible Chemicals take?

About 1 hour online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Reactive & Incompatible Chemicals certificate valid?

One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for reactive-chemical safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the chemicals, processes or storage arrangements change.

Which laws and standards does Reactive & Incompatible Chemicals cover?

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; WHMIS 2015 / GHS; and 4 more listed on this page.
