Spill Response Awareness runs workers through 21 interactions on the first-minute decisions — identifying the product, judging handle-versus-evacuate-and-call, and protecting drains and people — validating 6 competencies so awareness becomes the right first move.
Spill response awareness training for everyone who works where a chemical spill or hazardous release could happen — in manufacturing, chemical and oil-and-gas operations, transport and warehousing, municipalities and public works, water and wastewater, waste handling, laboratories, agriculture and general industry.
Equip everyone who works where a chemical release could happen to take correct DEFENSIVE action at the first moment of a spill — to recognize that a release has occurred and tell an incidental spill they may clean from an emergency release they must not…

Who this course is for
Any worker in an area where hazardous liquids or chemicals are stored or used and who may discover a spill.
Manufacturing, chemical and oil-and-gas workers who work where a chemical release could occur
Transport, warehousing, municipal, public-works, water and wastewater staff who may be first to find a spill
Laboratory, agriculture and general-industry personnel who work near stored or in-use chemicals
Waste-handling and environmental-services workers who encounter releases in the course of the job
What you will learn
Explain what a chemical release is at the awareness level and the three verbs of the awareness responder — recognize, retreat, report — as DEFENSIVE action only, never offensive action, and understand that you are the sensor, not the solution
Tell an INCIDENTAL spill (small, a KNOWN material, no significant hazard, within your training and PPE) from an EMERGENCY release (unknown, large, into a drain/soil/waterway, reactive/flammable/toxic vapour, anyone exposed, or beyond your training) — if you don’t know what it is, treat it as the worst
Explain why untrained response makes a release worse — vapour, reactivity, spread, drains, oxygen displacement — and the training-and-PPE boundary that keeps you from becoming the second casualty
Take the defensive retreat-and-isolate actions: back off, keep the exposure zone clear, deny entry, evacuate the immediate area, and remove ignition sources only if it is safe to do so from a distance
Report and notify correctly — the internal alarm and supervisor first, the Manitoba duty to report an environmental release, what information to give, and when it becomes a 911 call — without inventing a phone number
Course outline
You Are the Sensor, Not the Solution — Spill response begins the moment a chemical is on the floor where it shouldn’t be.
Don’t Become the Second Casualty — The family’s defining distinction made sharp — incidental (small, KNOWN material, no significant hazard, within training and PPE) versus…
Retreat and Isolate — The defensive action set — back off, keep the exposure zone clear, isolate and deny entry, evacuate the immediate area, and remove ignition…
Report and Notify — The report step — the internal alarm and supervisor FIRST, then the escalations.
The Mop Can Wait; the People Can’t — Know the narrow boundary where an awareness worker MAY act (small and known, within training and PPE), its limits, and how to hand an…
