Asbestos & Designated Materials Awareness

An Advanced Interactive asbestos and designated-materials awareness course delivering 11 interactions and 7 validated competencies in recognizing where these hazards hide in real buildings and materials and when to stop work. Learners avoid disturbing a hazard they didn’t know was there. It is the foundation of the Asbestos Safety Pathway.

Asbestos and designated-materials awareness training aligned with the Manitoba WSH Act and WSH Regulation MR 217/2006 Part 37 (Asbestos). It teaches workers to recognize asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in older buildings, understand the health hazard (asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma — with no assumed safe level and a decades-long latency), apply the do-not-disturb-and-report rule, distinguish friable from non-friable material, understand how the risk of asbestos…

Equip every worker who may encounter asbestos to recognize suspect materials, never disturb them, and report correctly — and to understand the controls, work classifications, and designated-materials program that protect them.

At a glance

Who this course is for

Workers in trades, maintenance, and renovation who may disturb asbestos or other designated materials during their work.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. Asbestos: What It Is, Where It Is Found, and Why It Kills — What asbestos is, the materials that contain it, and the diseases it causes.
  2. Do Not Disturb: Recognition, Reporting, and the Survey Requirement — The single rule for awareness-level workers, how to report, and why a survey is required before work in older buildings.
  3. Friability, Work Types, and Why It Matters — Friable vs non-friable, and the Type 1/2/3 work-risk classification set out in Manitoba’s official guidance to scale the controls.
  4. Controls, PPE, and Safe Work Practices — What properly controlled asbestos work looks like from survey to disposal, how the controls fit together, and the practices Manitoba prohibits.
  5. Other Designated Materials and Your Site Procedures — The broader designated materials, what Part 36 requires of the employer, and the site-specific procedures you must know.

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year. Review awareness training at least annually and whenever new ACM is identified or work scope changes.

This certificate records completion of awareness-level training in asbestos (MR 217/2006 Part 37) and other designated materials (Part 36) — recognizing asbestos-containing material, the do-not-disturb-and-report rule, friable and non-friable material, the Type 1, 2 and 3 work categories, and the employer asbestos control plan. It does not qualify the holder to disturb, sample, remove or abate asbestos-containing material, or to supervise that work. Manitoba reserves asbestos work to a person competent in it under the employer control plan, and the enacted WCB asbestos certificate and employer registration number become compulsory on 1 June 2027; this certificate is neither of those and does not count toward them. Designated materials such as silica and lead each carry their own Part 36 requirements.
