A foundation course that has drivers and spotters rehearse backing as a two-person decision, practising standard signals, blind-zone awareness, and agreed stop points. Its 10 interactions and 5 competencies build the coordination that actually prevents strike incidents, rather than describing them after the fact.
Backing up is where a work vehicle hits what its driver could not see, and it happens slow, in a yard or a lot. This course is the backing & spotting deep dive of the Fleet & Defensive Driving family: where the general fleet course teaches defensive driving on the road, this one focuses on the low-speed reverse that damages property, backs into other vehicles, and — worst of…
Equip anyone who drives a fleet/work vehicle or acts as a spotter to treat backing as the high-risk task it is: get out and look before reversing, understand that mirrors, cameras, and alarms do not guarantee a clear path, reduce and avoid backing by parking…
Drivers, equipment operators, and ground workers who back vehicles or act as spotters around blind spots and pedestrians.
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.
This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in backing and spotting, and it records the Trained state only. Before a worker backs a vehicle or acts as a spotter, the employer must observe the worker getting out and looking, backing with a spotter and agreed signals, and stopping the moment the spotter is lost from view, and sign that observation off as Competent. This is not a licensing or road-test course and does not replace any class-specific driver training the job requires.
About 45 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
Three years from the day you pass. Backing & spotting awareness is typically refreshed every 3 years OR sooner after a backing incident or near-miss, when a new vehicle, yard layout, or loading dock is introduced, or when a worker begins acting as a spotter.
