A core interactive course for floor operators of overhead and gantry cranes: 19 lift scenarios reading load, rigging, and travel path to spot side-pull, two-blocking, and pinch zones, validating 7 competencies. It builds the hazard-reading habits a pendant operator needs on every lift.
Overhead crane user awareness for every worker who operates or works around bridge, gantry, jib and monorail cranes — with pendant, radio or cab control — in manufacturing, warehousing, fabrication shops, maintenance bays, utilities and general industry. Aligned with the Manitoba WSH Act (C.C.S.M. c.
Give every worker who uses an overhead crane the awareness to treat a push-button pendant with the respect the load deserves rather than the respect the control invites — knowing the crane's rated capacity and the load's weight, running the daily pre-use…

Who this course is for
Workers who operate pendant- or radio-controlled overhead and gantry cranes from the floor in fabrication shops, warehouses, and production plants.
Production, machine-shop and fabrication workers who operate overhead cranes
Warehouse, distribution and manufacturing staff using bridge, gantry and jib cranes
Maintenance workers and millwrights who use shop and bay cranes
Utilities and general-industry workers who lift with pendant or radio-controlled cranes
What you will learn
Identify the common overhead crane types (bridge, gantry, jib, monorail) and their controls (pendant, radio/remote, cab)
Know the crane's rated capacity (marked on the crane) and the load's actual weight, and never exceed capacity or lift on a guess
Perform the user's daily pre-use inspection — hook and safety latch, hoist rope/chain, brakes and load drift, limit switches, controls/pendant, warning devices, and the capacity marking — and take a defective crane out of service
Operate the controls smoothly — the deadman, no plugging or jerking, the emergency stop — and understand that limit switches are emergency backups, not operating stops (no two-blocking)
Centre the hook over the load's centre of gravity and never side-pull or drag a load
Course outline
The Crane That Doesn't Feel Like One — What overhead cranes are (bridge, gantry, jib and monorail cranes on runways) and how they're controlled (pendant, radio/remote, cab), the…
Before You Push the Button — The overhead crane user's daily pre-use inspection — hook and safety latch, hoist rope or chain, the brake (must hold with no load drift)…
The Buttons and the Load — Operating the overhead crane's controls — knowing the load's weight is within the marked rated capacity; centring the hook over the load's…
The Load Overhead — The load path over a working floor — the overhead crane's defining hazard.
Park It Right — Securing and parking the crane — landing the load, raising the empty hook out of head height, moving the crane clear of the work area and…
Laws and standards covered
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210)
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.
This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in the safe use of overhead cranes. It does not authorize the holder to operate any particular crane. Before operating, the employer must confirm the worker is competent on that specific crane and authorize them to use it, and that crane's own operating manual and its marked rated capacity always govern. This training does not cover the maintenance, repair, periodic engineered inspection or load-testing of a crane, which are separate competencies.
Common questions
How long does Overhead Crane User Awareness take?
About 1 hour 10 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
How long is the Overhead Crane User Awareness certificate valid?
One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the equipment or operating conditions change.
Which laws and standards does Overhead Crane User Awareness cover?
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; CSA B167 — Overhead Travelling Cranes (design, inspection, testing, maintenance and safe operation); and 4 more listed on this page.
