Class VIII Personnel & Burden Carrier Operator — Part 1: Theory & Written Test

Class VIII covers personnel and burden carriers: the electric and engine utility carts, people movers and flat-bed carriers that move workers, tools and parts around plants, campuses, hospitals, airports and yards. They are not lift trucks under Manitoba’s lift-truck certificate rule, but they are powered mobile equipment, and Part 22 of the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation applies to every workplace that uses them. This course is Part 1 of this program’s Class VIII operator training: the theory and the written test (80% to pass).

Deliver Part 1 of Class VIII operator training so the learner keeps passengers seated and inside, stays under the rated capacity with people and cargo counted together, slows before every turn, drives as if nobody can hear the vehicle, parks with the key out, and walks into the Part 2 practical evaluation prepared.

Course outline

  1. It’s not a golf cart — Sofia gets the keys to the plant’s utility cart and calls it a golf cart. Dave starts with what Class VIII is, how the law applies to it, and what its plate says it can carry — people included.
  2. Seats are for sitting — The pre-use check, and the rules for the people Sofia carries: one person per seat, seated, inside, holding on. Nobody rides the bed, the bumper or the side step.
  3. Nobody hears you coming — Electric carts are almost silent, sit high on a narrow track, and stop slower loaded. Sofia learns to drive the route: turns, slopes, crossings, doorways, and a cargo bed loaded right.
  4. Key out, every time — Charging or refuelling, parking so nothing rolls and nobody borrows it, the bad seconds, the right to refuse, and the practical before Dave hands over the keys.
