Class VI Tow Tractor Operator — Part 1: Theory & Written Test
Class VI operator certification has two parts, and this course is Part 1: the theory training and the written test (80% to pass). Class VI covers tow tractors, the electric and engine-powered tuggers that pull trains of carts or trailers through plants, warehouses, hospitals and airports. A tow tractor has no forks and no mast, and that is why people underestimate it: the danger is behind the operator, and it is longer, heavier and harder to stop than the tractor in front.
Deliver Part 1 of Class VI operator certification so the learner treats the whole train as the vehicle: knows the rated towing capacity, couples and uncouples outside the crush zone, plans stops and corners for the last cart, never lets anyone ride, and walks…

Who this course is for
Plant, warehouse, hospital and airport workers who drive tow tractors or tuggers
Line-side and parts-supply route drivers towing cart trains
Supervisors and evaluators confirming the theory before the practical evaluation
What you will learn
Identify Class VI tractors and read the tractor’s rated drawbar pull and towing capacity
Run a pre-use check of the tractor, the hitch and every cart in the train
Couple and uncouple safely, never standing between a moving tractor and a cart
Explain how a towed train stops, turns and tracks, and drive for the last cart
Keep riders off the carts, secure the loads on them, and work crossings, ramps and docks
Charge or refuel, park and shut down safely, and respond to a runaway cart or an incident
Course outline
Nothing to lift — Mara is moved to the parts-supply route on a tow tractor. "Nothing to lift, nothing to drop." Dave starts with what the tractor is rated to pull, and what is behind her.
Never between — Most tugger injuries happen at the hitch: a hand on a drawbar, a body between the tractor and a cart. Dave teaches Mara the check of every cart and the coupling sequence that keeps her out of the gap.
Drive for the last cart — A train stops later, turns tighter and swings wider than the tractor in front of it. Mara learns to drive the whole length of it: speed, corners, crossings, ramps, and the rule that nobody rides.
Parked means it can’t roll — End of the route: charging or refuelling, parking a tractor and its carts so nothing rolls, the bad seconds, the right to refuse, and the practical evaluation before Dave hands over the key.
