Class VII Rough-Terrain Forklift & Telehandler Operator — Part 1: Theory & Written Test
Class VII operator certification has two parts, and this course is Part 1: the theory training and the written test (80% to pass). Class VII covers rough-terrain lift trucks: masted rough-terrain forklifts, and telehandlers whose telescopic boom reaches out and up.
Deliver Part 1 of Class VII operator certification so the learner reads the chart for the boom and attachment actually in use, levels the frame before lifting, travels boom low and in, respects ground, slopes, wind and power lines, stays belted in the cab in…
At a glance
Format: Online, self-paced and interactive
Length: about 2 hours 20 minutes, 5 modules
Pass mark: 80% on the final test
Certificate: QR-verified, valid for three years
Jurisdiction: Manitoba law and standards
Who this course is for
Construction, building-supply, agricultural and yard workers who operate telehandlers or rough-terrain forklifts
Workers moving from an industrial forklift to a rough-terrain machine
Supervisors and evaluators confirming the theory before the practical evaluation
What you will learn
Identify Class VII machines and the attachment combinations a load chart covers
Read a telehandler load chart by boom angle and extension, and use the load moment indicator
Level the frame and use stabilizers before lifting, and choose the right steering mode
Travel boom low and retracted, judge ground and slopes, and keep people out of the danger zone
Work safely near overhead power lines and recognize when a lift becomes a crane lift
Respond correctly to a tip-over: belted in, holding on, never jumping
Course outline
Ground that is never flat — Ravi goes out to the building-supply yard and meets a telehandler. Dave starts with what Class VII is, what the law asks, and the one thing that changes on rough ground: the machine can go over sideways.
The chart moves with the boom — A telehandler’s capacity is not a number. It is a map of where the load can be, and it changes with every degree of boom angle, every metre of extension and every attachment. Dave teaches Ravi to read it, and to trust the warning system without leaning on it.
Level first, then lift — Before the boom goes up, the machine has to be on firm ground with the frame level and, if it has them, the stabilizers down. Ravi learns the set-up, the order of a lift, steering modes and how to travel.
Overhead, underneath, all around — Power lines above, people below, wind on the load, and the day someone asks for a hook. Ravi learns what a job site adds to the lift.
Belted in when it goes — The bad seconds on a rough-terrain machine, refuelling and parking, the right to refuse, and the practical evaluation before Dave hands over the key.
