Eye & Face Protection

A foundation course that trains workers to match eye and face protection to the actual hazard, spanning safety glasses, goggles, face shields, and welding filters. Through 10 interactions and 5 competencies it builds the habit of selecting for the task instead of grabbing the nearest pair on the bench.

Eyes are among the most exposed and least replaceable parts of the body, and most eye injuries at work are preventable with the right protection worn correctly.

Equip every worker exposed to eye and face hazards to identify the hazard, choose the correct rated device for it (glasses, goggles, face shield, or welding helmet), understand…

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.

This certificate records completion of knowledge training in eye and face protection, and it records the Trained state only. It does not establish which device the holder's own work requires — that comes from the employer's workplace hazard assessment — and it does not establish that any safety glasses, goggles, face shield or welding helmet fit or are worn correctly, including wearing primary eyewear underneath a face shield. Before the worker relies on that protection, the employer must confirm the CSA Z94.3 or ANSI Z87.1 rating and the welding filter shade the work requires, and observe them selecting and wearing the correct device, checking its markings and fit, and keeping it clear and undamaged, and sign that observation off as Competent. Emergency eyewash location and use belong to the site first-aid and emergency program, which always governs. This training does not replace a welding-specific or laser-specific program where one applies.

Common questions

How long does Eye & Face Protection take?

About 45 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Eye & Face Protection certificate valid?

Three years from the day you pass. Eye & face protection awareness is typically refreshed every 3 years OR sooner after an eye/face incident or near-miss, or when new eye/face hazards (a new process, chemical, or welding work) are introduced.

Which laws and standards does Eye & Face Protection cover?

The Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); The Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (M.R. 217/2006), Part 6; CSA Z94.3 — Eye and face protectors (the applicable Canadian standard for eye/face protection); and 2 more listed on this page.
