Hand Protection

A Foundation/Awareness hand-protection course delivering 10 selection interactions and 5 validated competencies across cut level, chemical breakthrough, grip, and dexterity. Workers learn to match gloves to real hazards and recognize when the wrong glove is worse than none.

Hands are the tools we work with, and they take on more hazards than any other part of the body — which is why hands get hurt at work, and why those injuries are among the most preventable. This course is the hand-protection deep dive of the PPE family: where the general PPE course teaches how to select, fit, and care for protective equipment across the whole body, this one…

Equip every worker with hand hazards to identify the hand-injury hazard types, select the correct glove for the task using cut, chemical, heat/cold, abrasion, and vibration…

Who this course is for

Workers whose hands face cuts, punctures, chemicals, heat, or crush and pinch hazards across trades and production roles.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. The Injury That Puts You Off the Tools — The hand-injury hazard types — cut/laceration, puncture, abrasion, chemical, heat/cold/burn…
  2. The Right Glove for the Task — Matching the glove to the task — cut-resistant gloves for sharp edges, chemical-resistant gloves…
  3. Reading the Rating — Cut Levels and Chemical Breakthrough — Reading glove ratings — ANSI/ISEA 105 cut levels A1–A9, the EN 388 mechanical marking, chemical…
  4. The Rule People Get Killed By — Gloves and Rotating Equipment — The critical rule — gloves come off around rotating or moving equipment (drill press, lathe…
  5. Inspect, Remove, Replace — Keeping Gloves Protecting — Keeping gloves protecting — inspecting for breaches before use, removing contaminated gloves…

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.

This certificate records completion of knowledge training in hand protection — the hand-injury hazard types, task-based glove selection, glove ratings, and glove inspection, use and removal — and it records the Trained state only. It does not establish which glove the holder's own work requires: that comes from the employer's workplace hazard assessment, and for a chemical from that product's safety data sheet and the glove manufacturer's permeation and breakthrough data, which always govern. Nor does it establish that any glove is worn, inspected or removed correctly. Before the worker relies on gloves, the employer must observe them selecting and wearing the correct glove for the task, keeping gloves off around rotating or moving equipment, and inspecting and removing gloves correctly without contaminating the hands, and sign that observation off as Competent. This training does not replace a chemical-specific glove-selection assessment based on the SDS or a task-specific safe-work procedure.

Common questions

How long does Hand Protection take?

About 45 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Hand Protection certificate valid?

Three years from the day you pass. Hand-protection awareness is typically refreshed every 3 years OR sooner after a hand/finger injury or near-miss, or when new hand hazards (a new chemical, blade, process, or piece of equipment) are introduced.

Which laws and standards does Hand Protection cover?

The Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); The Workplace Safety and Health Regulation (M.R. 217/2006), Part 6; ANSI/ISEA 105; and 2 more listed on this page.
