Forklift / Powered Industrial Truck Awareness

A pedestrian-focused forklift course that trains you to read the hazards operators and bystanders share — blind corners, load stability, and limited sightlines — across 13 interactions. It teaches ground staff and operators to stay clear of the danger zones the equipment creates.

Enterprise-grade forklift awareness training aligned with Manitoba WSH Regulation Part 22 (Powered Mobile Equipment) and the Manitoba Code of Practice for Safe Operation of Powered Lift Trucks that it makes binding. This is an AWARENESS-LEVEL course — it does NOT certify a forklift operator.

Equip all workers around forklifts to recognize hazards, work safely as pedestrians, and prepare designated operators for the practical-certification step required by Part 22 and the Manitoba code of practice it makes binding.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. Forklift Classes, the Stability Triangle, and Capacity De-Rating — The 7 forklift classes, how the stability triangle prevents tip-overs, and why capacity drops as load centre or lift height changes.
  2. Pre-Start Inspection and Safe Operating Practices — Pre-start inspection items, safe operating practices, and the inspection-log requirement.
  3. Pedestrian Safety and Site Traffic Management — Why the person on foot is the one with no protection around a forklift, the separation rules, and how a site traffic plan keeps people and…
  4. Load Handling, Rollover Survival, and Refuelling / Charging Hazards — Safe load handling and travel on ramps, what to do (and never do) in a tip-over, and the distinct hazards of refuelling propane/diesel and…
  5. Manitoba Operator Certification Requirements — The certification pathway, the practical-evaluation requirement, refresher triggers, and the gaps to check a forklift program for.

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year. The Manitoba Code of Practice for Safe Operation of Powered Lift Trucks calls for certified operators to be retrained at intervals not exceeding three years, and for a refresher…

This certificate records completion of awareness-level training in forklift and powered industrial truck safety under MR 217/2006 Part 22 — truck classes, the stability triangle and capacity de-rating, pedestrian and traffic hazards, pre-start inspection items, and refuelling and charging hazards. It is not an operator certification and it does not authorize the holder to operate a lift truck of any class. Under MR 217/2006 s.22.29 and the Manitoba code of practice it makes binding, the employer certifies an operator only after the worker has demonstrated competency on the specific class of truck to an evaluator the employer has designated, with retraining at least every three years and a refresher after an accident or near miss; no online score and no self-certification can stand in for that evaluation. This course is the knowledge prerequisite to it.
