A machine safeguarding course of 19 interactions and 6 validated competencies where learners inspect fixed, interlocked, and presence-sensing guards for the gaps that let hands reach the hazard. It builds the discipline to decide whether a machine is safe to run rather than assume it.
Knowledge training for the person an employer designates to inspect and sign off machine safeguarding — the guards, interlocks and presence-sensing devices on fixed and production machinery — in manufacturing, fabrication, food processing, wood, metal and plastics work, and warehousing automation.
Equip the worker an employer designates to inspect machine safeguarding to verify that a machine's guards, interlocks and presence-sensing devices are not only in place but…

Who this course is for
Machine operators, maintenance workers, and anyone working on or around guarded production equipment.
Maintenance and millwright leads who inspect and sign off machine guards, interlocks and safeguarding devices
Safety coordinators and safety personnel responsible for a machine-safeguarding inspection program
Machine-shop supervisors and production leads who verify safeguards before a machine returns to service
Workers being designated (or considered) as a competent person for machinery inspection
What you will learn
Explain the competent-person inspection role — you inspect and sign off, you do not operate; the operator trusts the status, not the guard's internals; and your signature is the guard — and that the employer designates the competent person (in writing, as this program's standard)
Inspect each safeguard with the correct method and function-test interlocks and presence-sensing devices (not just visual) — opening an interlocked guard must stop the motion, and a light curtain or mat must actually trip and stop the machine; presence is not proof
Verify the safeguarding hierarchy is in place and appropriate for the hazard — a fixed guard's security, fasteners, gaps and correct distance from the danger zone; the right guard type for the point of operation, nip points and rotating parts
Recognize a defeat during inspection — a taped or jumpered interlock, a spare or "cheater" actuator key, a bypassed sensor — and treat a guard that "looks fine" but was never function-tested as unproven, not passed

The Signature Is the Guard — Your signature is the guard. As the inspector you don’t operate the machine…
Function-Test, Don't Eyeball — How to inspect each safeguard, and the word that separates a real inspection…
Pass, Restrict, or Fail — Every inspection ends in PASS, RESTRICT or FAIL, and the hard part is making…
The Record — Documenting a defensible inspection — where the inspector's signature actually…
Standing Behind the Tag — Your name is on the tag, so you must stand behind it when someone leans on you…

Certificate and renewal
Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year.
This certificate records completion of knowledge training for the machine safeguarding inspection role. It does not by itself designate or certify the holder as a competent person for machinery. That designation is made by the employer (in writing, as this program's standard), based on the worker's knowledge, training AND experience for the specific machines and safeguarding systems in use. This training does not cover energy control (lockout/tagout), which is a separate competency.
Common questions
How long does Machine Safeguarding & Guard Inspection take?
About 1 hour 15 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.
How long is the Machine Safeguarding & Guard Inspection certificate valid?
One year from the day you pass. Orientra’s standard is for machine-safety training to be reviewed at least annually and whenever the machines, guards, safeguarding devices or processes change — a new machine, a modified guard, a new interlock or presence-sensing device, a different task, or a near-miss all trigger a refresh.
Which laws and standards does Machine Safeguarding & Guard Inspection cover?
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006, Part 16; CSA Z432 — Safeguarding of machinery (the safeguarding hierarchy and guard types; cited generally, with CSA Z434 for…; and 5 more listed on this page.
