Mobile Equipment Safety

A mobile-equipment course that rehearses the decisions behind struck-by and rollover incidents — pre-use checks, blind spots, traffic separation, and stable operation — across 11 interactions. It teaches operators and ground workers to read the machine and its danger zone before it moves.

Mobile equipment safety training aligned with the Manitoba WSH Act, WSH Regulation MR 217/2006 Part 22 (Powered Mobile Equipment) and Part 20 (Vehicular and Pedestrian Traffic), and CSA B335 (Safety Standard for Lift Trucks). It covers the equipment that moves on a worksite — excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, lift trucks, and similar — and the hazards that make it deadly to the people working around it: large blind zones, ground instability, overhead hazards, pedestrian interaction, and rollover.

Equip workers and supervisors to recognize mobile-equipment hazards, complete a pre-use inspection, keep pedestrians and machines separated, manage site traffic, and control rollover risk — and to understand that unsupervised operation requires an in-person competency evaluation.

Who this course is for

Operators and ground workers around mobile equipment — loaders, skid steers, telehandlers, and utility vehicles on sites and in yards.

What you will learn

Course outline

  1. Mobile Equipment Hazards — The five hazard families of mobile equipment, starting with workers on foot struck or run over.
  2. Pre-Operation Inspection and Safe Operation — The walk-around inspection, the safety systems that must work, and operating to the manufacturer's procedures.
  3. Pedestrian Safety and Site Traffic Management — Keeping people and machines apart: separation, communication, spotters, and the site traffic management plan.
  4. Stability, Rollover and Load Handling — How loads, slopes and turns affect stability, and why ROPS + seatbelt are the rollover survival controls.
  5. Operator Competency: Training, Evaluation and Site Readiness — Why online theory is only the knowledge layer, and what the in-person competency evaluation must confirm before unsupervised operation.

Laws and standards covered

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for one year. Review training at least annually and whenever the equipment, attachments, site, or the operator changes. The in-person operation evaluation is renewed per the employer program. No exact mandatory theory-hour minimum is set in Manitoba law — industry/provider standard applies.

This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in mobile equipment safety. It does not authorize the holder to operate any mobile equipment. Unsupervised operation requires task-specific training on that equipment and a competent-person evaluation, and that in-person operation evaluation is renewed per the employer program; the manufacturer's procedures and the data-plate rated capacity always govern.

Common questions

How long does Mobile Equipment Safety take?

About 1 hour 30 minutes online, over 5 modules, at your own pace. It ends with a final test that needs 80% to pass.

How long is the Mobile Equipment Safety certificate valid?

One year from the day you pass. Review training at least annually and whenever the equipment, attachments, site, or the operator changes.

Which laws and standards does Mobile Equipment Safety cover?

Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act (C.C.S.M. c. W210); Manitoba WSH Regulation MR 217/2006; CSA B335 — Safety Standard for Lift Trucks; and 2 more listed on this page.

Is the online certificate enough on its own?

This certificate records completion of awareness-level knowledge training in mobile equipment safety. It does not authorize the holder to operate any mobile equipment. Unsupervised operation requires task-specific training on that equipment and a competent-person evaluation, and that in-person operation evaluation is renewed per the employer program; the manufacturer's procedures and the data-plate rated capacity always govern.

Is this course part of a training program?
