MEWP Trained Occupant

A MEWP trained-occupant course covering the occupant's real duties — operator communication, fall protection, safe positioning, and platform limits — across 12 interactions and 6 competencies, so the person in the basket is a safe partner, not a passenger.

Trained-occupant training for workers who RIDE in a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) — a scissor lift or boom lift — but do NOT operate or drive it (an "occupant").

Give trained occupants the knowledge and discipline to ride a MEWP safely — stay inside the guardrails, wear the right platform fall protection, keep the load and communication…

Certificate and renewal

Passing the final test issues a QR-verified certificate, valid for three years.

This certificate records completion of knowledge training for the MEWP trained occupant — the worker who RIDES in the platform under a competent operator — and it records the Trained state only. It does not authorize the holder to operate or drive a MEWP: operating a MEWP takes operator training and a hands-on practical evaluation on that machine in this program, and the employer's authorization, and Manitoba law prescribes no MEWP operator certificate. It also does not establish that the holder can carry out the occupant's own physical duties on the machine they will ride: wearing a harness with a short lanyard clipped to the platform's designated anchor on a boom lift, and reaching and using the standby / emergency-lowering controls to bring the platform down if the operator is incapacitated. Before the worker rides, the employer must train them in the platform's safe work procedures (M.R. 217/2006 s.28.2(1)(b)) and ensure fall arrest is used wherever s.28.39 requires it. Orientra's program standard is that a competent person shows them the emergency-lowering controls on that unit, observes them, and signs that off as Competent.
